During the unit on the classic novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, students incorporated the development of grammar, art, and historical studies to enhance their overall learning. This holistic approach built confidence within the students and they worked on tasks that they wouldn’t normally be exposed to. As a post-reading activity, peers learned to sew dolls to emulate what a child in the 1800s would do. Student also practiced their summary, recall, visualization, and grammar skills by creating a story that put themselves in the place of Tom going to Jackson Island. These activities allowed the students to practice core curriculum skills as well as work on creative, interdisciplinary tasks that enabled them to develop a sense of pride and accomplishment.
